Connecting Gmail and Google Workspace

You connect Gmail with an app password: a 16-letter code that Google creates especially for this connection. Your regular Google password does not work here. This also applies to an address on your own domain that runs on Google Workspace.

Step by step

  1. Turn on 2-Step Verification: open 2-Step Verification. Google only creates app passwords when this is on. Already on? Carry on.
  2. Create an app password: open app passwords. Type a name you recognise, for example the name of this app, and click Create.
  3. Google shows a 16-letter code in four groups. Copy it.
  4. Open your profile, Email tab, click Connect account, enter your Gmail address and paste the code. Spaces are fine; we remove them.

If you change your Google password later, Google revokes all app passwords. You will then see Reconnect needed; create a new app password and connect again.

No app passwords to be found?

  • Is 2-Step Verification off? Turn it on first.
  • Do you only use security keys or Advanced Protection? Then Google does not offer app passwords.
  • A work or school address (Google Workspace): the admin of your organisation can turn off app passwords and IMAP. Ask whether they can be turned on. For the admin: turn on POP and IMAP in the Google Admin console.

Which settings do we use?

We fill them in for you: imap.gmail.com (port 993) for receiving and smtp.gmail.com (port 587) for sending. You don't need to change anything.
